Following a strong instruction in phonics, targeted sounds and an emphasis on independent and shared reading, our students enter Kindergarten already reading. This achievement allows us to introduce our creative writing program, which we call “secret language”. It is amazing to watch throughout the year as the stories unfold from gibberish and pictures to words and sentences.
The continuation of mastery learning is an effective part of our program. It is during these formative years that we help children develop their study skills and challenge them to grow academically and socially. It is important to guide each child toward self-discipline and self-reliance. Learning approaches in reading and math include individual attention and small groups. Group interaction is emphasized in other areas such as science, social studies and extra-curricular activities.
In the fourth through seventh grades our students are taught using the team teaching concept. Team teaching allows us to provide teachers with expertise in specific subject matter. This approach allows students to change classrooms throughout the day instead of being taught in a self-contained classroom situation.
